Here at Madison Dental Health Partners, we are proud to be able to offer nitrous oxide sedation to our patients.
Did you know
…nitrous oxide makes many people feel happy and warm. It causes a lot of people to laugh, so it is often called laughing gas.
Nervous about having dental work done?
Let us help.
Drs. Marti and Spencer are happy to provide nitrous oxide as a safe, reliable way to control dental anxiety. Nitrous oxide is a gas which benefits anxious patients by reducing the sensation and experience of pain and anxiety. Beginning with a few deep breaths, nitrous oxide can induce calmness during a dental procedure, assuring a better patient experience.
Nitrous oxide is safe and effective because it can be turned ‘on’ or ‘off’ quickly and has wide safety margins. It is not the same as being ‘put under,’ which normally occurs under general anesthesia in the hospital setting. The patient is still awake and responsive during the procedure, but they feel somehow separated from the experience. We effectively adjust the setting, allowing patients the right amount of sedation for a given procedure.
Many patients experience a pleasant sensation throughout their body and describe the feeling as enjoyable. Once it is discontinued, the sensation dissolves quickly.
We carefully apply nitrous oxide to our anxious patients through a mask positioned over the nose. A mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is delivered through an adjustable flow meter allowing for real-time monitoring and quick adjustments.
Advantages of Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide can be used for most dental procedures, from simple fillings to complex surgeries, and is ideal for extremely anxious patients. It is a fast, safe, and effective way to reduce anxiety and make our patients as comfortable as possible during their procedures. It works particularly well with children, adults, and medically-fragile patients.
The best part of nitrous sedation? You can still drive yourself home after your appointment. You will spend a short period breathing 100% pure oxygen which quickly flushes the nitrous oxide out of your system within minutes. This allows a quick reversal of the effects, giving you the ability to drive home.
